Chuck Engel (Team Marathon Guide) of Dublin, Ohio flew through the rugged coastline course at Grand Island in record time of 2:46 (6:22/mile pace).

After crossing the finish line Engel kept running another 50 yards and made the plunge into the cold waters of Lake Superior. Defending champ Dan Dehlin (Team Vasque) kept pace with Engel for about 10 miles before the pace became too demanding. Dehlin finished in 2:55. Engel's strong running style fit the tough trail terrain at Grand Island well and should spring board him to good performance at Pike's Peak in August. Rick Cahoon of Blanchard, Michigan was the only other runner to break three hours on Grand Island, finishing third in 2:58. Pam Weir of Marquette, Michigan captured the overall women's title in 3:32. She was follwed closely by Rebecca Kosten of Champaign, Illinois in 3:34. Elite masters runner Donna Gering of Ironwood, Michigan earned a third place overall in 3:44. Nineteen year old Jeremey Kiley of Marlette, Michigan toured the hilly 10K course in 35:59 to earn overall honors. He was followed by Hank Risley of Cedar Springs, Michigan in 36:54. Risley was also the top Master's runner, being more than twice the age of Kiley. Both Risley and Kiley were the only 10K runners to complete the course in under a 6:00/mile pace. Paden Stalter of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan crossed the line in 38:30 to finish third. Mindy McCutcheion of Marquette made it a clean sweep for Marquette women at Grand Island, joining Weir as an overall champion. McChutcheion cruised to her title in 43:48. Peggy Zeeb of Colon, Michigan was in strong pursuit, following the winner by only 5 seconds in 43:53.
