Great Lakes Endurance has worked with the race directors at Grandma’s Marathon, Chicago Marathon, Detroit Free Press Marathon, and the Toledo’s Glass City Marathon to organize the Great Lakes Marathon Series. The Series includes 25 marathons located along the five great lakes.
All three of GLE’s marathons are in the series including Grand Island, Porcupine Mountains, and Waugoshance. The purpose of the series is to bring attention to Great Lakes water quality and restoration efforts. The Great Lakes Marathon Series has partnered with the Alliance for the Great Lakes, a non-profit dedicated to improving the health of the Great Lakes Ecosystem, including concerns for water quality, invasive species, and water conservation. You can take as many years as necessary to complete all 25 marathons. There are awards and incentives for reaching milestones along the way. “We are really happy to join the Great Lakes Marathon Series. Its mission is consistent with Great Lakes Endurance, promoting environmental awareness and restoration via endurance running,” noted GLE race director Jeff Crumbaugh. “We were approached last year by Jeff Rosenthal of Grandma’s Marathon about the concept and were very supportive and joined the organizing committee. It has been a thoughtful process and the end result is a marathon series that will bring much needed attention to the environmental concerns of the Great Lakes.”
